PROHIBITION OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT

  • The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that prospective adoptive parents pledge not to use corporal punishment in disciplining their adopted child, or allow others to do so, until such time as a Final Order of adoption is entered.

    Corporal punishment includes the infliction of pain or discomfort. Prohibited actions include, but are not limited to, hitting with any part of the body or with an implement, pinching, pulling shaking or binding a child, forcing him or her to assume an uncomfortable position or locking him in a room or closet.
